Would you give up sugar to experience the sweet presence of God in your life?
Many of us think that if our bodies become healthier, then we’ll be healthier. But a healthy body doesn’t do us a lot of good if we are spiritually malnourished. Welcome to the 40-Day Sugar Fast, a process that begins with us giving Jesus our sugar and ends with Jesus giving us more of Himself–the only thing that can ever truly satisfy our soul’s deep hunger. On this journey you’ll learn how to
● stop fixating on food and fix your eyes on Christ
● pinpoint the triggers that send you running to sugar
● lose weight as you gain faith
● turn to the Most High instead of the next sugar high
If you run to sugar for comfort or reward, eat mindlessly or out of boredom, feel physically and spiritually lethargic, or struggle with self-control, this fast will help you discover not only freedom from your cravings but an entirely new appetite for the good things God has for you.

Sugar shackles
Great way to “break sugar shackles” by being encouraged each day with spiritual truths. It opened my eyes to terrible snacking habits that had slowly creeped into my diet.

Not Just a Book about Fasting
This book isn’t just about fasting sugar and physical detox. As the subtitle claims, it’s a book about spiritual transformation. I truly enjoyed reading through this earlier this year and participating in the fast. The short studies of God’s word took me deeper in my relationship with Him, and going without sugar for that long gave my brain a break from the sugar fog, which brought focus and clarity when reading this book and studying God’s Word. If you want to start your year with clarity and focus and Jesus, this is the book for you! I highly recommend it and will be reading it again. Probably every year.

No regrets! But it now!
I just finished the 40 days today! I have tried to curb sugar/carbs for 42 years by myself it didn’t work… but GOD!!! Not only did I complete the 40 day sugar fast challenge but I read an entire book! I have been steadfast in my Bible readings, no sugar, no breads, pasta, rice etc and down 11 pounds! I am proud of myself for sticking with it and know that I did not do it on my own He was with me every step of the way… everytime I thought about getting a snack I picked up my Bible or read the things in the book that stood out to me while reading.. I truly do believe I am on my way to serious lifestyle changes! Thanks Wendy for being obedient and writing this book! I loved this book so much I have purchased some for gifts! I have also purchased her 2 others fasts and will start on the next one tomorrow! God Bless you all on your journey!

2nd time to complete
Such a wonderful guide to fasting. Author is not dogmatic about telling you how and what to eat but allows you and ultimately the Holy Spirit to guide you in your fast. This is the second time I have used this resource for a Lent fast and only the second time I have successfully finished a Lent fast thanks to the daily encouragement and direction to God. The first time I used this book, I was personally very restrictive and experienced some physical detoxing and weight loss. This second time, I was not as restrictive. I mostly just eliminated sugar and ultimately bread/wine as suggested. I would say I had more of a spiritual detox and recognized triggers that send me to food and not God. I am planning to read Feast for the next 40 days which only seems natural after a 40 day fast.

hope for my sugar battleground
I have a long-standing love affair with sugar. I inherited a wicked sweet tooth from my dad and an affection for all things chocolate from my mom. There is just one very big problem. As much as I love sugar, it does not love me back. In fact, it is rather cruel, unkind, and frighteningly damaging to my physical body!Especially after an indulgent holiday season, the battle begins again in my head. How can I make better choices? What is the best way to care for my 50-something body responsibly? I know sugar is my fiercest enemy, but do I really need to give it up completely? Can I find a happy medium, an “everything in moderation” place to land?I never know the right answer. Ever. I swing from one extreme tactic to another or give up entirely and binge on all the wrong things. The vicious cycle leaves me feeling defeated, helpless, confused – and quite honestly, shockingly alarmed by how much this dialogue raging in my head consumes me!I gulp back the realization. It scares me to see the breadth and depth of this life-long wrestle. Fear grips me as I wonder if the enemy of my soul has been using this battleground to keep me chasing my own tail for far too long!I reach in the only direction I know I can trust. I cry out to the LORD to help me solve this riddle once and for all!I believe part of His answer is coming in Wendy Speake’s new book (releasing in just a few days!), “The 40-day Sugar Fast: Where Physical Detox Meets Spiritual Transformation,” published by Baker Books.Wendy shares many of the same struggles with sugar. She holds very strong convictions about which practical changes and disciplines in her diet will serve her best, physically and otherwise. But this book is not a “how to” guide. Although Wendy offers a few practical suggestions, her book does not give anyone a road map or a diet plan. There are no strict instructions. No promises or guarantees.Instead, this book holds a precious invitation – to commit the next forty days to focused conversation with the LORD, to ask HIM for His plan for me, as I navigate my own very personal battle with sugar (and/or the ways the enemy is using sugar to defeat me).If sugar is my battleground, then the welcome is clear. Take a break! Retreat from the heat of the battle to a safe place. Rest. Check in with my Commanding Officer. Receive some fresh training and perspective. Be still and listen for His next steps of instruction. Trust Him to show me His path and to equip me to succeed in that plan!I appreciate so many details about the layout of Wendy’s book. She welcomes us to journey with her for forty days, the same amount of time the LORD JESUS spent in the wilderness, battling the same enemy of our souls! Each day, just as JESUS did, she incorporates Scripture to speak truth, life, and allegiance to the Father into our growth process. She encourages deep thought and prayer. And she shares her own personal stories to let us know we are not alone in the fight!I love that the desired result is not a specific weight goal or fitness accomplishment. More than anything else, Wendy longs for us to tune our hearts to the Savior, to experience a deeper and truer relationship with Him. She is confident that this intimate dialogue will yield His very best plan for each of us to navigate whatever battleground we face. Regardless of the specific outcome, His desire is always that we rest in His care, trust and obey as He leads, and be open to receive His most precious gifts – ones we will recognize more clearly as we lean on Him and not ourselves! It is good to have a frame for this journey, a defined forty days of focused dialogue with the LORD about a specific battle. This marked endpoint inspires confidence that the commitment is “doable!” But Wendy is also praying the discipline to hush all other voices and hear only His will continue long after forty days. She firmly believes time invested alone with the LORD will not only bring victory in our battles but lasting transformation in our relationship with Him!Do you have a struggle that consumes you more than it should, leaving you weary or defeated longer than you realize? Would it help you to know the LORD cares about those challenges? That He longs for you to simply ask Him what to do next? Even if sugar is not your fiercest enemy, there are thought-provoking and deeply encouraging truths worth pondering in Wendy Speake’s “The 40-Day Sugar Fast: Where Physical Detox Meets Spiritual Transformation.” You will find a warm and friendly companion in Wendy. She will take you by the hand and lead you to priceless moments alone with the Savior! I am grateful for her passion that inspires others to embark on this journey.I received a complimentary copy of Wendy’s book from Baker Publishing, as part of their “Baker Books Bloggers” program, but my own personal response to its content is reflected in this review.

Life changing
This book is everything I needed and touched on topics that I’ve considered but could never find anyone who discussed it. This book is very holistic in the sense that it starts about fasting from sugar but then you end up letting go of so many other things! Thank God for Wendy and her obedience to God to share this wisdom. I recommend this book to everyone who is struggling w depending on a vice rather then God— even if it’s not sugar! It’s very insightful. Even if you fail to make the full 40 days, you still learn so much and have tools and understanding that’ll stick with you for the rest of your life. I was the type that couldn’t go a day without sugar! My first time following the book, I went 24 days without sugar and even when I broke my fast I didn’t binge like I’d normally do. I was less impulsive and more in tune with my body and my mind. Quickly recognizing what caused this trigger and what I needed to pray for that particular day.In conclusion, Get the book!

This was my second annual 40 day sugar fast – where physical detox meets spiritual transformation. This book deserves my highest recommendation. Wendy is gentle yet pointed. She pulls no punches but binds up my wounds as she invites us continuously to return to the Lord for satisfaction instead of candy binges, online gaming, compulsive spending or whatever else we use to fill the void and distract ourselves. I’m grateful for these daily devotional chapters by Wendy, the succinct quotes, the encouragement and the absence of judgment. We’re reminded of God‘s grace and his open invitation to every prodigal, “Come to me all you who are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest. My yoke is easy and my burden is light.”In practical ways, I feel more normal than any normal I’ve ever known. Brain fog is gone, inflammation and joint pain almost nil, and have an elevated mood. I always knew refined sugar affected my mood, but this book helped me learn true, lasting satisfaction comes only from the One who made me. God truly fulfils my soul cravings I’ve been trying to fill with sugar.I have had been lifted out of depression by this fast, the devotionals, and have experienced great peace in the last month as I drew closer to Jesus. From fasting to feasting, this book is a banquet. Five stars.
